Afghanistan exports reach nearly $2 billion for first time

Officials of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MoIC)  have informed that for the first time, Afghanistan’s exports have reached nearly US$2 billion, showing a 135 percent increase compared to 2021. Speaking to the media in a news conference at the Government Media and Information Center  (GMIC) here in Kabul, officials of the country’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce said that exports of Afghanistan products to foreign and neighboring countries have increased unprecedentedly in the past one year. “Afghanistan’s exports have jumped to nearly US$2 billion for the first time, showing a 135 percent increase compared to 2021,” said Mawlavi Qutratullah Jamal, deputy minister of industry and commerce. Mawlavi Jamal added that the trade balance increased by nine percent last year, based on which Afghanistan had 78 percent imports  and 22 percent exports in 2022. According to the deputy minister of industry and commerce, the Islamic Emirate is paying spe-cial attention to the development of industry; therefore, Afghanistan has reached full self-sufficiency in producing nearly 50 different items including 15 kinds of medicines, carpets, beverages and others. Also, briefing related to the work and achievements of the ministry, Mawlavi Jamal said that about 100 investors have received foreign visas and have shown interest in investing in various sectors of the country, especially in mining and agriculture, adding that with the cooperation of relevant departments of the ministry of industry and commerce, 5100 licenses have been issued, 7228 licenses extended, 333 licenses have been canceled and 7000 new business passports have been issued to traders and investors. The Deputy Minister further said that his ministry has collected over 700 million AFG in the past one year, which was showing a 43 percent increase compared to 2021. It is the first time that Afghanistan’s domestic products’ exports to neighboring countries have increased by 135 percent in the past one year comparing to previous years. Various products including agricultural products are exported to neighboring and regional countries as Pakistan, Iran, China, Kazakhstan and other regional countries.  Previously, officials of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan  (IEA) had reported that the country’s exports to neighboring countries, particularly to Pakistan, despite of some challenges in the two countries’ ports have significantly increased comparing to the previous years. According to the country’s ministry of industry and commerce, precious and semi-precious stones, dry fruits, manufactured commodities, coal and agricultural products are the most exported items which have been exported to Pakistan in the past one year. This is to be noted that hopes are increasing when such news are heard particularly when the Islamic Emirate announces the country’s exports to the neighboring countries have significantly increased compared to the previous years.
