Afghanistan defeats Australia by 21 runs in T20 World Cup 2024

KABUL: The Afghanistan National Cricket team defeated Australia by 21 runs at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent to stay alive in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the Cricket Board said in a statement the other day. The Blue Tigers posted a competitive total of 148 runs, driven by standout performances from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, the statement said. In the second innings, Afghanistan’s bowler Naveen Ul Haq made an early impact, dismissing two key Australian players. Naveen Ul Haq took three wickets from the opposition, setting the stage for a crucial contribution from Gulbadin Naib. Naib’s dismissal of Maxwell (59), one of Australia’s key players, significantly eased Afghanistan’s path to victory. The historic win marked Afghanistan’s first-ever victory against Australia in a World Cup match. Despite the loss, Australia remained in second place in the table with two points. Afghanistan’s next match in the Super Eight stage is against Bangladesh, while Australia faces India, a team in good form. If Australia loses to India and Afghanistan surpasses Bangladesh, the Blue Tigers will advance to the World Cup semi-finals. The upcoming matches will be crucial as Afghanistan aims to build on its momentum while Australia seeks to regain its footing in the tournament. The Kabul Times
