Afghan politicians’ unity key to success of intra-Afghan talks

The agreement to end the brutal conflict in Afghanistan, which began nearly two decades ago with the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington and became America’s longest war, was signed on Saturday in Doha.
US President Trump hailed the accord, formalized with signatures and a handshake between U.S. negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad and the Taliban representative, Abdul Ghani Baradar, as historic. “There hasn’t been a moment like this,” Trump said at a White House news conference. “We’ve had very successful negotiations. . . Everybody’s tired of war.”
Meanwhile in a joint declaration issued during a press conference in Kabul which was also attended by President Ghani and a number of the country’s political figures, the US and NATO reiterated their long-term support of the Afghan government, saying Afghan National Defense and Security Forces would be backed by the international community.
Indeed, the seven days of reduction in violence has created an atmosphere of confidence as well as showed the true will of Taliban for peace and stability in the country. Meanwhile Afghan masses expressed mix reactions to the agreement reached between US and Taliban, saying that the accord should result into lasting peace and that no further deteriorate the situation and once again the group resort to civilians killing.
Thanking international support for Afghanistan, the Afghan masses that have defied all the threats and voted for republic and democracy in the country, willing to see their legitimate and republic system represent them in key meetings, including that of the peace talks. Afghans believe that intra-Afghan talks are the only way forward to lasting peace and stability in the war-torn country.
But it is important to establish unity among political factions who are supposed to sit across the table with Taliban to discuss peace.  Taliban have so far played well and continue to maintain unity in their rank and file to negotiate. The commitment to reduction of violence and executing it is testimony to their unity. However, the Afghan government has assured time and again that will establish an inclusive negotiating team consist of all political parties to represent the government in drafting the agenda for peace and discuss peace. The president has already begun consultations with different segments of society to seek their support of the intra-Afghan talks.
Afghanistan is a multi-national country where several beliefs, mentalities and mindsets are cherished, and individuals live a peaceful life with the spirit of brotherhood. In this society, living a quiet social life will be impossible without national integrity. Therefore, struggles should be multiplied to strengthen national unity and all ethnic groups need to support it as a principle. They have to take effective steps with bona fide intention for solidarity, unity and coexistence so that to enter the peace talks with Taliban from strong position and help achieve stability in the country
It should be realized that national unity is a crying need in Afghanistan and is considered a significant element in bonding the nation and living a peaceful life. On the other hand, gaining access to democracy and social justice, maintaining human rights and ensuring public and fundamental rights and freedoms in the society will necessitate adhering national unity.
Meanwhile, harmony and integrity of Afghan nation, mutual respect, tolerance and respect towards the rights and beliefs of one another, lack of tendency towards sensational behavior will be the deciding factors behind national unity and durable peace in the country.
