5,000 historical sites registered countrywide, official

KABUL: The Deputy Minister of Information and Culture for Art and Culture Affairs Mawlavi Atiqullah Azizi, during his visit to the country’s western province of Herat, the other day, said that 5,000 historical sites have so far been registered with the ministry. “If a full survey is done, over 20,000 historical monuments would be found in the country and due to decades of conflict the ministry was not able to register further historical monuments,” the statement quoted Azizi as saying. He said that Bamyan, Ghazni, Herat, Balkh, Kabul and Kandahar provinces have the most historical sites, which most of them dated back before Islamic period, according to the statement. The deputy minister, according to the statement, went on as saying that every province of the country has its own historical places; therefore, more efforts are needed to conduct survey and register new historical monuments.
